This is the latest film by Ryan Coogler, best known for being the director of the Black Panther movies. If you have a chance to see this in a movie theater, I recommend that you do it. It was shot to be seen in iMax and there are some scenes that I found to be really beautiful on the big screen in a way that makes it worth it to see now.
Set in the Mississippi Delta, it follows the story of two twin brothers and their younger cousin who want to open a juke joint. Like Jordan Peele’s Get Out, this movie integrates the real-life horror of racism with the fictional horror of vampires and it is visually powerful.
I also want to note that Ryan Coogler was able to negotiate a deal for this film where the rights revert back to him in 25 years which is important given how many Black artists never own the work that they produce. So I hope you will check it out and that we can lean into a conversation about it.
